Questions

Asked often, answered plainly.

Why a 3-season agreement?

Because the first season carries all of the design and material cost, and seasons 2 and 3 are where the value shows. Your lights are cut and fitted to your home. Spreading that across 3 seasons lets us hold the price, keep your materials in our warehouse, and put the same crew standard on your roof every year. You never think about it again until we call in September.

What is included?

Everything. The design visit, the design, all materials, installation, timers, season support through Christmas Day, takedown in January, storage, testing and replacement of materials, and reinstall in years 2 and 3. There is nothing to buy and nothing for you to store.

What does it cost?

Programs begin at $2,000 per season. Most estate programs run higher, depending on feet of roofline, number of stories, trees and shrubs, wreaths and garland, and ground lighting. Billy prices your design at the visit, and that price is locked for all 3 seasons. We do not quote from photos.

Who comes to my home?

Billy Massie, a local fireman and certified first responder. He walks the property with you, designs the lighting, and prices it on the spot. If you like, he will also do a complimentary home safety walk-through: smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, outdoor outlets and cords, the things a first responder notices.

Do I own the lights?

No, and that is the point. We own, maintain and replace them. If a bulb fails or a line is damaged, it is our problem, not yours, and it is fixed at no cost.

What if a bulb goes out?

Text or call and our support crew fixes it, usually within a day, at no charge. Support runs through Christmas Day.

When do you install and take down?

Installs begin in mid-October with the timers off, so your home is ready well ahead of the season. Lights come on the date you choose. Takedowns run January 2 through 31, again on your date.

Can I choose my dates?

Yes. You tell us the day the lights come on and the day they come down. Many homeowners choose the day after Thanksgiving and the first week of January.

Do you take every home that asks?

No. We accept a limited number of new homes each season so our crews can hold the standard, and we schedule installs in the order agreements are signed. Once the season's calendar is full we start a list for the following year.

Do you work on slate, metal or cedar roofs?

Yes. We are roofers first. Slate and metal are never walked; we work from ladders and poles. Clips attach to gutters and shingle edges, so nothing is nailed, screwed or stapled into any roof.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. United Exteriors is a Virginia Class A contractor (Dement Development Inc., license 2705118085), the highest class the Commonwealth issues, and is fully insured. A certificate of insurance is available on request. Most holiday light installers are not licensed contractors at all.

Who will be on my roof?

Certified roofers from United Exteriors, led by a Team Leader who is the one person who speaks with you on install day. The same crews that work on Virginia roofs all year, not seasonal strangers with a ladder.

How long have you been in business?

United Exteriors has been family-owned in Virginia since 2005, more than 20 years, with 68 Google reviews averaging 4.8 stars across Richmond and Virginia Beach. United Signature Lighting is its holiday lighting division.

What about my HOA?

We accommodate HOA display windows and takedown dates as a matter of course. If your association has a rule we should know about, tell Billy at the visit.

Can you light my club, business or neighborhood entrance?

Yes. Our program comes from Pittsburgh Socialights, which lights country clubs and commercial properties every season, and we design for them in Richmond. Request a callback and mention the property.
